LOCOG and the tortoise

LOCOG and the tortoise

(the following article can be downloaded from http://www.sponsorshipconsulting.co.uk/_documents/pdf/logoc.pdf)

This article is not written by me - authors

Whilst LOCOG is regularly reported as insisting that there is a healthy appetite for their top-tier sponsorships, their inability to address lower-tier partnerships is resulting in several sponsors taking their monies and investing them elsewhere.

In the last six months alone a significant number of corporations have signed up to sponsor UK sports governing bodies and other Olympic related organisations, including Corus (British Triathlon), Lucozade Sport (British Canoeing Union), Scholl (British Athletics), Scottish and Southern Energy (Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy), Siemens (GB Rowing) and Man Group (England Hockey). The specific objectives of each partnership will differ, but they are united by one common theme: a desire to “get involved” in the push towards London 2012.

Clearly, these companies were not willing or able to wait for LOCOG to go public with lower tier opportunities. As Wendy Stephenson, Chief Executive of Sponsorship Consulting, which facilitated the Corus and Siemens deals, attests: “There is a huge amount of interest in the Olympics across the board. Our clients, recognising the long lead times required to optimise returns from their sponsorship investments, wanted us to help them find opportunities that would get them started as soon as possible. It is very unfortunate that LOCOG sponsorship packages could not be part of the selection process.” So why is LOCOG playing the tortoise in a race apparently full of hares? Well, like the tortoise’s “slow but steady” race-winning strategy, LOCOG’s revenue generation approach is based on the premise that the higher the value it can negotiate for the top-tier national sponsorships, the more it will be able to demand for lower tiers.

LOCOG has to find a £2 billion budget, with sponsorship, ticket sales and merchandise being the main contributors. Recent research by Millward Brown suggests that ticket sales to British fans might top £278 million. This is more than double the 2004 Athens Olympics ticket revenue target of €176m (£120m). The most recently published target for sponsorship revenues is £750 million, nearly double the £450 million in the original London bid. Even allowing for foreign ticket sales and merchandise royalties, estimated at €76.5m (£52.2m) for Athens, there is still a huge financial gap for LOCOG to close.

With this in mind, it is hardly surprising that LOCOG is pinning its hopes on securing its first six sponsors at an eye-watering £100m each over 6 years. Automotive, Banking, Insurance, Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Utilities are the first sectors to be honoured with the offer of becoming official partners for the 2012 Games. And what benefits are being offered in exchange for £100m of cash and in kind? Bearing in mind that the Games is a “clean stadia” event, these sponsors will not be able to write off their investment against free media exposure.

In fact, LOCOG sponsorship is being positioned as a game-changing opportunity that top-tier sponsors can leverage across their business for competitive advantage in their sector. This is quite a clever idea, but £100m worth of value creation is going to be challenging for even the biggest businesses to identify.

Perhaps this is why the timetable for announcing first sponsors appears to be slipping. Original predictions were by July this year, then before Christmas 2006, with Spring 2007 now being suggested, a euphemistically broad catogorisation that could take us past the second anniversary of winning the Bid. But it is not only the timetable that is slipping; several corporations are “slipping” out of the race. In the banking sector, HSBC and Barclays have publicly declared they have excluded themselves, so all eyes are now on Lloyds TSB as the front runner. In Utilities, British Gas are going to struggle to justify the spend whilst also announcing £100m worth of restructuring (is the figure coincidental?) and EON is clearly focusing on football.

LOCOG is caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. If it rushes its top-tier negotiations in order to move on to capture second- and third- tier funds, it risks sub-optimising its income. However, it cannot wait forever whilst these large corporations, not known for the speed of their decision-making processes, undertake exhaustive and interminable rounds of business case development.

Good graduate advice for those considering going through agencies to find work

Hi all,

The sports recruitment company is constantly looking for experienced staff to fill many positions. Although recent graduates find it difficult to get some jobs that usually involve greater levels of experience the company provides a very good webpage that highlights why it is difficult and strategies for improving your chances. This constructive advice is interesting and can be found at http://www.sportsrecruitment.co.uk/content.php?id=29

Also you may see there is a current poll on how mauch salary would you sacrifice to get your ultimate job in sport. The results are interesting....

Internships, traineeships etc

Hi all,

Just wanted to keep you informed of some current internships and trainee programmes that occur from time to time. For those interested in the marketing of sport many marketing agencies run these types of programmes. The agencies can be sport (and entertainment) focused such as Octagon (http://www.octagon.com/worldwide-offices) and IMG (http://www.imgworld.com/home/default.sps) or they can be traditional marketing agencies that have an interest in sport Hill & Knowlton (http://www.hillandknowlton.com/), Red Mandarin (www.redmandarin.com) amongst others……

The work in these agencies is often long and fairly intense with quite average pay, BUT they are usually characterised by a positive team environment and look to promote from within. Currently the following agencies have internships and traineeships on offer

IMG Internships

Athletics UK - New Staff and New Directions

Athletics

As per our discussions in strategic management and through reviewing the Foster Report http://www.ukathletics.net/about-us/modernisation/ it is clear that Athletics in Great Britain is in need of quite significant organisational change.

The following stories from the BBC and various sources;

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/6244449.stm as can be seen Warner has significant experience outside sport in finance/funds management that he can hopefully bring to the direction of UK Athletics. (More on Warner from the official press release http://www.british-athletics.co.uk/foster/edwarner.pdf)

Joining him in senior management is Niels de Vos whose appointment is recorded here http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/6310763.stm Once again the management of the sport has looked to business to lead it.

Interestingly they have both agreed that the UK's medal hopes of finishing forth at the 2012 Games here in London may be unattainable (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/6329633.stm). At present no athlete from Great Britain is inside the top 50 athletes for men and women in the world (source IAAF website). This is not necessarily all doom and gloom as Colin Jackson recently declared there may be junior athletes rising.

Nevertheless throwing money at the problem will not necessarily assist it, i.e. if this is an attempt to coerce funders to give athletics more money. Maybe we have to address the competitive position of athletics in school. Can it compete with other sport offerings? If there is a push toward individualism then couldn't athletics capitalise on that?

This is an interesting case in the management of a high profile sport (especially at Olympic times) I am sure more will follow.

Job Opportunities

Hi all,

One of the best ways for UK based graduates to find out about jobs is through the Uk Sport Website.

The site is updated regularly and can be accessed at http://www.uksport.gov.uk/vacancies/

Of particular interest this week is http://www.uksport.gov.uk/vacancies/score_rdo_290107 although some experience is needed this would be a very interesting project to be working on.

If any international graduates know of employment sites in Australia (for instance http://www.sportspeople.com.au/ ) please let us know. There are recruitment agencies who deal specifically in sport (a couple here in the UK) but please be wary of jobs that are continually being advertised, they can sometimes vary in quality of opportunity.

Welcome to the Site

Welcome Page

This site is created to provide graduates (and current students) with an online resource for news, events and general keeping in touch.

For those of you who don't know who we are:

The MA Sport Management Course is offered at the North Campus of London Metropolitan University. The course has been running since 2002 when it was created from the MA Leisure and Tourism.

Our current offer can be seen at (sorry for the sell but it wont happen much) http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/pgprospectus/courses/sport-management.cfm

At the time of writing the course has 17 students from Britain, France, the United States and we have over 50 graduates from many European countries, Canada, the U.S., Brasil, India and even Australia.

If you are interested in doing the course send me an email or click on the link above. If you are an international student (outside EU) and you are interested in funding then follow this link;

http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/international/howtoapply/scholarships/scholars.cfm

http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/international/howtoapply/scholarships/latest-london-met-sports-results/sports-scholarships.cfm

Right, enough of the selling!

For those of you that do:

I hope your chosen careers are progressing well. For those into the sport industry already I am hoping you find the work challenging and awarding. Your experiences, no matter who small they may appear to you, are really interesting to many students on the course at this time, and of course all the Undergraduate and Higher National Diploma students at LondonMet also. Please use this site to post comments about the news and event releases that I post here. To create your own postings (of which would be most welcome) all you need to do is send an email to p.kitchin@londonmet.ac.uk and I will add your email to the access list.

Who am I?

For those of you I have not met (i.e. you did the course before I arrived or you are thinking of doing the course) my name is Paul Kitchin and I am the current course leader. I am from Australia but live and work in London and have done since 2002.

I am aiming to link together everyone that has done the course and allow them to communicate through this site. It will hopefully be more effective than trying to create newsletters and send them out periodically.

For those of you who keep in email contact regularly please continue to do so but this site may allow you to spread your news, questions, opinions to all.
