THE ROLE:
Background and Job Purpose:

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games has been established as the organisation that will plan and stage the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

There are currently 26 sports on the Olympic programme and 20 sports on the Paralympic programme with athletes from 203 National Olympic Committees competing in the events.

The Sports Department responsibilities include planning and organisation of the sports competitions, sports input into the briefs for venue design, identification of training venues, test event planning and the development of the competition schedule.

The Competition Manager is responsible for the planning, organisation, management and conduct of the competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

We are looking to recruit 29 Sport Competition Managers, as detailed below:

Employment period:

Successful candidates for all positions will be formally identified by December 2007. The full employment period will vary from sport to sport but all Competition Managers will be expected to attend the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008, for a period of time as determined by the Head of Sport Competition.

Following Beijing, certain Competition Managers will become full time, whilst others will take on a part-time role. It is expected that all competition managers will be full time employees of the London 2012 Organising Committee by 2010 through to 2012.

Salary: Competitive

Key responsibilities/accountabilities:

* Oversee the running of the competition and provide the focal point for International Federation/International Paralympic Sport Federation (IF) contact in relation to competition issues.
* Ensure that the competition is organised and conducted in accordance with IF rules and regulations, IOC Charter and the Host City Contract, in consultation with the IF Technical Delegates.
* Liaise with other the London 2012 Organising Committee functional areas to ensure the coordinated delivery of support services such as accreditation, security, transport, medical, media, villages, venue operations, venues, host broadcaster and volunteers.
* Work with other functional areas to organise and conduct the official the London 2012 Organising Committee Test Event.
* Liaise regularly with the IF Technical Delegates and National Governing Body (NGB) on matters relating to the preparation of the competition.
* Report to IF on a regular basis at the IF congress and/or World Championships and assist in the preparation of material to be presented to the IOC Coordination Commission, as required.
* Establish a list of equipment required for sports’ competition.
* Provide a specific sport input into venue planning and operations for all competition and training sites.
* Recommend an appropriate organisational structure and appropriate staffing levels for the conduct of the competition.
* Recruit, train and manage staff on a day-to-day basis.
* Collaborate with NGB regarding the selection and training of National Technical Officials.
* Work in conjunction with Human Resources Department and NGB regarding the selection and training of Sport Specific Volunteers.
* Organise and conduct orientation and briefing sessions for all staff, technical officials, and volunteers prior to the commencement of the competition at the Games.
* Ensure all the London 2012 Organising Committee assets assigned to the area are properly secured and maintained.
* Ensure all the London 2012 Organising Committee policies and procedures are followed, venue emergency procedures are in place and related issues (e.g. discipline, security, working conditions, etc) are properly enforced, documented and irregularities reported.
* Attend such meetings and undertake such liaison as may be necessary as Competition Manager, reporting and taking action as required.Where appropriate the above will embrace the relevant responsibilities relating to both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Key skills required:

* Detailed knowledge of relevant Olympic/Paralympic requirements
* Experience in event management and operations
* Close relationship with relevant International Federation/International Paralympic Sport Federation
* Proven management expertise and ability to lead and motivate a team
* Long-term interest and involvement in Olympic/Paralympic Sport
* Ability to work under pressure, working to timetables and budget
* Report writing and presentational skills.
* Understanding of both domestic and international sport
* Knowledge of the Olympic and Paralympic Games

The appointment will be made under the London 2012 Organising Committee's standard terms and conditions.
