A lot of this is straigtening out the management roles and responsibilities - not before time - as cricket has neglected management structure while attempting to implement the fletcher strategy - it worked as an autocracy but the structural lack of underpinning meant that failure was too apparent for it to survice - its also about having orderly succession. As regards the game - apart from stating the bleeding obvious, there is a lack of coherent objectives for the game. the tensions between 2pm 40 over games (good for crowds) and 11.00 50 over games 9good for developing cricketing skills in the World Cup) are not addressed. Oddly enough some of this may lie in the origins as Sunday league as day night is not attractive with a Monday 'back to work' psychology - but day/night could be attractive on Fridays or saturdays? When wither POETS day syndroem or going to see a run chase in the evening on Friday would draw crowds. County games could then start on a saturday or Suinday (hopefully increasing attendance on day 1,and poss day 2 and certainly gardly diminishing mid week interest. Reducing the county championship to a development school for talenetd young cricketers i have already mentioned , with a few seasoned ex Test and overseas players helping out in development and skills transfer/coaching. The straycture then would be a hierarch of test and ODI, 50 over day/night, rest days on Weds and Thursday, country games Sta/sun for fourdays as nurseries for test performance - and no reason why Test platers could not get a game in them when needed by the management. As reagrds the amount of county cricket, it would fall to soemwhere around the 12-14 games, but i would explore county-based regional leagues as 'conferences' in the 4 day game to drive up derby game gates 9and for the 50 over), and have a four day championship game to decide the winners in September- that might improve competiton.
On incentives, I agree with Schofield on pay for performance rather than fat central contracts, but also there should be a better pensions arrnagement in cricket as careers are increasinglky going like football ie dedication from age 16-17 to playing and no time for other education - perhaps universities migth think about how to get closer to the games 9as Leeds carnegie are doing0 and joining up scholarships with player development? lots to speculate about but cannot see too mnay ECB turkeys voting for Xmas yet
